In recent years, press-fit plumbing systems have gained significant popularity due to their ease of installation and reliability. However, improper installation techniques can lead to leaks and other issues. One common mistake is not fully pressing the fittings, which can result in a weak connection.Over the last month, we have been receiving more calls from consultants taking metal press systems out of their specs due to full bore detachments on site. In this blog we explain how you can look at preventing this on your site.

What Installation Issues Can You Get With Metal Press-Fit Systems?

Like with most systems, you can always install things wrong and with the metal press-fit systems (due to the way the fitting must be made), the failure is generally due to incorrect pipe insertion depths on fittings.

Often, installers are not marking the pipe up and, when working up high, do not get the right depth to pass the O-ring but, more importantly, where the crimp is made. So always make sure you follow the insertion depth given by the individual manufacturer, then use a permanent marker to ensure you cannot rub the mark off when getting it into place. If the fitting moves during the press, then cut out the fitting and start again.

Why Choose Multipipe Press-Fit Fittings?

The Role of Joint Windows

To address this issue, Multipipe incorporates joint windows into our metal press-fit fittings. These windows provide a visual confirmation that the fitting has been fully pressed, ensuring a secure and leak-proof connection. These visual indicators help prevent installation errors, leading to fewer leaks and callbacks.

Best Practices for Metal Press-Fit Installation

  • Use the Right Tools: Ensure you have the appropriate press-fit tool for the job.
  • Proper Pipe Preparation: Clean and bevel the pipe ends before inserting them into the fittings.
  • Full Press: Apply the press tool firmly and evenly until the joint window is fully compressed.
  • Visual Inspection: After pressing, visually inspect the joint window to confirm a complete connection.
